We're supposed to believe this guy was a victim of a stabbing by the Proud Boys tonight. He says there was a knife in him, but then clarifies it was only his armor. I do not see a stab mark on that vest. Drew Hernandez's video shows him in a different light earlier in the day.

As they marched with the giant "TRUMP: LAW AND ORDER" flag, the Trump supporters chanted "when we go one, we go all!" a reference to the Q-anon conspiracy theory.
Their last stop was the Trump hotel, where they did a giant flag wave and then folded it for the night.

VIDEO THREAD: Trump supporters tore down the "Black Lives Matter" wooden signs posted on a building tonight at the intersection of I and 16th Street, just north of the White House.
https://twitter.com/FordFischestatus/1327873417916329984?s=19
When police realized Trump supporters were tearing the wooden signs from a building, they did step in and escorted one person away from the building, but did not make any arrests.
https://twitter.com/FordFischestatus/1327873892032147456?s=19
Riot officers soon came in to police the MAGA protest and formed a line, but they parted to make an opening for the enormous (it took a couple dozen people to carry it) "TRUMP: LAW AND ORDER" flag to get through.
https://twitter.com/FordFischestatus/1327874281628463106?s=19
"Clean the streets! Clean the streets!" the Trump supporters chanted.
They had aspired to tear down the art posted on the fence at #BlackLivesMatterPlaza, but police guarded it, preventing them.
They tore at the small, exposed words "invest in community" on the fence instead.
https://twitter.com/FordFischestatus/1327875919348961282?s=19
Owen Shroyer of Infowars spoke to the MAGA crowd.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I can announce to you right now in high confidence that Donald J. Trump has been re-elected for United States president," he said to cheers and chants of "USA!"
https://twitter.com/FordFischestatus/1327898625305948160?s=19
"No Trump, no peace! No Trump, no peace!" the Proud Boys chanted at Willard InterContinental hotel, closer to the White House.
The chant is a reference to the commonly used "No justice, no peace" chant in progressive protests.
https://twitter.com/FordFischestatus/1327895525656498176?s=19
One Proud Boy said "Break out Kyle" referring to Kenosha shooter Kyle Rittenhouse.
"Break out Kyle! Break out Kyle!" the Proud Boys chanted before Enrique Tarrio added that "We're just kidding, ladies and gentlemen."
https://twitter.com/FordFischestatus/1327893548142878720?s=19
They marched to the Washington Monument where Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio gave a speech.
"This right here shows the power when we, the right wing, unite, and we get together." he said.
He says he's glad the election was contested bc it shows his group "what's at stake."
https://twitter.com/FordFischestatus/1327892413004779525?s=19
"Say his name! Donald Trump! Say his name! Donald Trump!" the MAGA supporters chanted.
https://twitter.com/FordFischestatus/1327889644588068865?s=19
As Proud Boys and Trump supporters marched on, antifascists did stand in their path, but police swiftly moved between the two sides, rendering violence between them basically impossible.
Proud Boys diverted and marched away chanting "fuck antifa!"
https://twitter.com/FordFischestatus/1327889239879671808?s=19
"All commies are bastards!" chanted the Proud Boys.
Another fight broke out, but the person sparring with a Proud Boy ran away.
As some began chasing the man, another tried to stop them yelling, "No! It's a bad look!"
The fight didn't continue after a block-long chase.

2020.10.24 04:48 Megatronscoffee Advice: going back to work during this Pandemic.

I live in the greater Vancouver area. Things are really heating up here COVID wise unfortunately. I made a deal a couple months ago that I would be "on call" for shifts at my restaurant. I didn't want to work in in such close proximity to the public because frankly, I'm anxious about it. As well my dad is extremely immunocompromised, so much so that I should not see him at all if I work in the restaurant. My restaurant is following correct guidelines, however certain coworkers (the chef and others) don't believe in COVID and are anti-maskers... the whole bit. As such, I don't trust them at all to be adhering to social distancing, or bubble limiting advice. Working with the public is one thing, but the fact that I have to be in close proximity to people that I know are not taking it seriously (in the hotbed of the COVID surge in BC) had me concerned enough to want to reduce my hours and just be on call. So for the past two months I have not had a shift which has suited me just fine. Except well, now of course my limited income is stressing me out and there is uncertainty about which benefits I am eligible for. I'm not keen to find a different job because the job hunt is EXTREMELY difficult right now and other than what I mentioned before my restaurant is an amaaaazing place to work, not to mention that of course serving pays so much better than other retail type jobs. Now fast forward to my manager texting me if I could come back to work once a week. I feel I may be trading one stress for another. What should I do? What would you do? Am I overthinking this? I should mention that I am trying to start a private business teaching singing (I have a performing arts degree) but building a client base is hard and I'm not as far along in that endeavor as I'd hoped.
Thanks in advance, sincerely, an anxious server.

2020.10.13 02:13 Yani-vancity My one and only unforgettable paranormal experience

Hi Mr. Ballen:
The way you shuddered and paused when you recounted your own real experience is exactly how I feel when once in a while I tell my one and only paranormal experience to others. I don't know if there's enough space here so here goes...
I was 14, snuck out of the basement one summer night to join my friends to drive around town with some older boys we met. Around midnight we reached Stanley Park (Vancouver BC) and decided to drive around it (one way around the whole park). We parked on one side to get out and looked at the beautiful downtown lights (facing south). We heard what sounded like low tenor singing and thought it was someone playing opera in their car radio and didn't think much of it. After maybe 5 mins we got back in the car to continue driving around the park (it's like a peninsula). I was seated right behind the driver in the back, and there were two other girls in the back with me, 3 boys in the front. There's no lighting around the park drive so we drove slowly. We started turning around the east end of the park, driving now on the other side of the park heading back the same direction we came. From my side I can look out the window back towards downtown lights. We had the windows up and was passing by a clearing where there were a few totem poles and you could see the downtown lights in the background. I looked in the direction where we got out earlier, and saw (and now goosebumps just came and the image is still clear as day) very clearly silhouettes of people, a few standing, gathered around a huge bonfire (there must have been at least 50 people to make a circle that big around it) and heard group singing. I got excited and shouted to the driver to hey back up there's a bunch of people having a party or something, and the girl who sat right next to me saw it too and agreed. We backed up, only having gone maybe half a block, rolled the windows down, saw and heard nothing but eerie silence. Everyone freaked out and the driver sped out of the park as fast as he could as there was no exit for a while around the park drive. If you google it you'd see that where we got out faced "dead man island" (with its own history) and where the totem poles still stand today has been developed as a tourist spot so you can no longer see through it like we did back in the 80s. That spot is apparently ancient burial ground which we didn't know. It was the first time (hopefully last) I experienced something I can't explain. I never snuck out of the house again and haven't visited Stanley Park after dark again either. Keep up the great storytelling!

Something nice that has happened to you in the past month

bgro:
I reserved a rental car months in advance and when I showed up, they told me I would need to wait two hours for the car to be ready and I think they were expecting me to be an asshole about it because they were kind of preemptively dickish about it. Instead, I just went home, waited two hours, came back, got my car and then because I had been cool about it, they comped me about $100 for having to wait. The whole reservation only cost $220 so that was pretty cool.
Cory:
Got a real nice performance evaluation from my job. I've been unsure about the job ever since I switched to remote work, just feeling extremely unmotivated and not very efficient, so it was good to hear that it's mostly in my head.
Des:
Didn't exactly happen to me but a student told a coworker that the reason she chose Xavier was because the grounds are so beautiful.
dylan:
owner at nearby greek place we like gave us a free bottle of house wine when we told her we just moved in down the street, pretty cool
Ruairi:
I visited one of my best friends in Texas with our other best friend. First time ever being in a small town like that and it was awesome. Makes me kinda want to live in some small town when I get older as a high school baseball coach with a hot wife.
jiggy:
i moved to a new city and made new friends that's pretty nice

That I didn't need therapy as a teenager. Really wish I would have stuck with it!
therapy: It's Good!
Ruairi:
I dunno never really argued with my parents. gonna have to take the L on this one
des:
I can't think of anything specific :/
:/
bgro:
It's been a long time since I argued with my parents. I would guess it was some time when I was still living at home and I was just being standoffish and unappreciative of the fact that my parents were housing/feeding me. I would barely talk to them and just stay in my room and I dont remember having a specific conversation about it, but eventually I realized that I was the one who needed to change my attitude because really my parents weren't doing anything wrong.
pjd:
That I wouldn't regret spending time with them and the rest of the family. Now that im out on my own i do regret all the times i passed up spending time with them. If i could go back i would have spent as much time with them as possible
relationships with family: It's Good!
jiggy:
i haven't really argued with them about much but my mom did argue against me moving in with my ex (HAD SEX WITH ANOTHER PERSON WHILE IN A 'MONOGAMOUS RELATIONSHIOP' WITH ME) so that seems like a fair one to post
iama:
I really didn't want to eat my vegetables. I probably should have eaten the vegetables.
lbon:
this is most topical for me but kinda boring but i argued with my parents in favor of not contacting a person i barely know who recommended a college counselor to my dad when she recognized him at a movie theater. we ended up contacting the counselor and she has been great.
dylan:
My dad used to get annoyed about how I always overpacked my bookbag in high school and I always blew it off, but now I have back problems that aren't necessarily related to that but it really makes you think

Lianne La Havas's newest album - definitely my AotY pick for 2020 so far. I just love everything about it.
desmond:
I've been watching a lot of No Reservations and Bourdain just has such an interesting view of the world. He's so self-aware when he goes to poorer countries, and, while he initially comes across as somewhat pompous, he's actually incredibly kind and complimentary of the people who cook for him. I'm really sad that he killed himself and I think about it a lot when I'm watching.
bgro:
Really can't say enough good things about Schitt's Creek. It's hilarious and heartwarming and I think it might even be the best Catherine Keener has ever been in anything. Dan Levy and Annie Murphy somehow make their hilariously entitled characters actually redeemable and you root for their success. It's just a good-hearted show that consistently makes me laugh.
Ruairi:
the 5th season of Lucifer. Nobody I know has watched it so I haven’t been able to talk about it
pjd:
I started reading a series called Lightbringer by Brent Weeks. I just finished reading the first book in the series "The Black Pirsm" and was blown away. Here is the plot summary for the book In a world where magic is tightly controlled, the most powerful man in history must choose between his kingdom and his son in the first book in the epic NYT bestselling Lightbringer series.
Guile is the Prism. He is high priest and emperor, a man whose power, wit, and charm are all that preserves a tenuous peace. Yet Prisms never last, and Guile knows exactly how long he has left to live.
When Guile discovers he has a son, born in a far kingdom after the war that put him in power, he must decide how much he's willing to pay to protect a secret that could tear his world apart.
Ive really been digging it and cant wait to start the second book

dylan:
I'm addicted to watching a Vancouver-based youtube named Northernlion become aggressively more toxic every time he plays Fall Guys. He was already my favorite and he just doubles down on the ridiculousness. It's fantastic in every way.

Describe your perfect Sunday morning

iama:
I am awoken early by sunlight streaming through my window. Nonetheless, I feel well rested. I lie in bed for a short while basking in the soft warmth of the sheets and the soft sunlight filling the room. Stretching, I rise. I shuffle into the kitchen, where bacon and eggs are being cooked by my housemate. I help get breakfast ready, and then I eat my breakfast at the table while sipping coffee. After breakfast, I prepare for the day's activities.
desmond: My internal clock actually allows me to sleep past 8:30, I get up and get a breakfast sandwich to bring back home and eat on my porch with some tea. I watch a show or play some video games for a while and take a nap around lunchtime.
Ruairi:
It’s raining/drizzling outside. I wake up next to my hot wife/girlfriend and play some Michael Bublé. Then I put on a fire in our fireplace. Start making breakfast. We’re talking pancakes, french toast, and cinnamon rolls. My hot wife walks into the kitchen wearing a Nick Castellanos jersey and nothing else. Life is good. we eat our breakfast and drink champagne because why waste the good taste of champagne with orange juice. We eat our breakfast and drank our champagne out on our balcony watching the rain

A wonderful smell makes its way into my room, its the smell of chocolate chip pancakes. My wife has prepared my favorite breakfast with chocolate milk as a beverage. I blow bubbles into my chocolate milk because i am a child. In this perfect world i have quit my job and no longer have to work Sundays. I go outside, get some fall yardwork done. Leaves raked into a big pile to be given that good suck by the leaf blower. Then 1 PM rolls around. Its football time. My mother and grandmother who are both massive Eagles fans have come to my house to watch the game. The Eagles blow out the Cowboys, Carson Wentz throws for 300+ yards and 5 Touchdowns. My wife prepares my favorite dinner, Chicken Alfredo. We have a nice red wine with dinner as well. Some of our friends join us for dinner as is Sunday tradition and then games afterwards. 2020.08.28 08:11 ToliB List of Canadian References in CDR S1E9

Oh snow she betta don't, here we are, the penultimate episode. The Snow Ball, the girls are challenged to come up with 3 looks inspired by a common theme. So, once more with feeling In the tradition of Last Week's Episode lets go through the list of Canadian cultural refrences. Also, did you know it snows in Canada?
Celebrities Come To Call:
Sabrina Jalees: Stand-up Comedienne, Actress, Writer, Columnist. I recommend reading her article My Family Broke Up With Me.
Michelle Visage: Corner Stone and key of the judging panel of DRUSA, known for her dangerous eyebrows, Music Career, and Guest Hosting on moderately amusing web series.
Rumail:
"The More You Snow, The More You Blow" putting aside that 'Snow-blowing' is a fun lil euphemism the snow blower was invented in Saint-Léonard-de-Port-Maurice Quebec by Arthur Sicard in 1925.
Mini-Challenge:
Boucherville: Founded by Pierre Boucher in 1667, in 1843 a fire raged that destroyed most of the village, however it has since rebounded into a bustling resort town on the St.Lawrence River, and is currently an independent city within the greater urban agglomeration of Longueuil.
O Canada: The national anthem, the song is taught in 3 versions, one that is pure English, one that's pure French, and one that is an amalgam of the two versions. it wasn't officially our anthem until July 1st, 1980. There are edits to the lyrics being debated such as substituting "Our home ON native land" Removing God from the lyrics, and changing "sons" to be more gender inclusive. Most children in Canada are required to stand(if able) and sing it as part of their school morning routines in Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Prince Edward Island.
Main Challenge Prep:
Apres-Ski: An after-skiing party to relax, rest those aching haunches, pull the pine needles from your teeth, and enjoy a hot bevvy. Culture Trip has a list of the top-10 spots at the world famous Whistler, BC which is home to one of the worlds largest ski resorts
Tragedy Mirror
Scarlet Bobo makes mention of an abusive step-father, and unfortunately in Canada it's a major problem. Domestic abuse makes up 1/4 of police reported violent crimes and that's just what gets successfully reported.
Vancouver Island, BC The large island off the coast of British Columbia, the city of Vancouver ironically is not found on the island that shares it's namesake. instead the cities of Victoria and Nanaimo call this island home along with several smaller cities. The City of Nanaimo also shares it's name for a fudge variant dessert the Nanaimo Bar
Kitchener, Waterloo, Ont: (now that you're humming Abba) the city has a large Germanic population, and is home to a yearly Oktoberfest,
London, Ont: a former collection of first nations villages, Archeological info shows the area to have been inhabited for the past 10,000 years. it has had a complex growth into the city of modern day.
Runway:
Ajax, Ontario: 16km east of Toronto, on the shore of Lake Ontario, stands the city of Ajax. named for the HMS Ajax a WW2 Royal Navy Cruiser, the town was founded in 1941 when a Shell factory was established to help with the war effort.
u/BEARS_WILL_EAT_YOU climbed out of the grizzly's mouth to add:
Michelle Visage references a "business' women's special" which is a gay themed monthly party in Toronto.
Priyanka's outfit in the Apres-Apres ski is a reference to the iconic Roots Cabin Sock with their solid gray body, white cuff, and distinctive red stripe. they're frequently used to make Sock Monkeys.
"ooh, she went for a polar bear dip" A winter tradition in Canada, where "Only the bold bare the cold"- in the dead of winter, polar bear dippers will strip down to their swimsuits (or sometimes less) and take an icy swim in a semi-frozen lake or river and wear their near hypothermia as a badge of honour. those who survive are often inducted into regional polar bear clubs.
Untucked
you know what's fun? watch the drinks Priyanka holds. up-down-up-down-up-down.
Judging
Brooke tries to make a loon call. it's a bit more successful than Tom Green's of weeks prior.
Air Canada Vacations: Air Canada is the national airline of Canada, this is their version of a travel agency.
Lip Sync:
Closer- Tegan & Sara: from their 2013 album "Heartthrob" this track won the Juno award for Single of the Year. it made it to #13 on the Canadian hot 100, and #1 on the US Dance Club charts. it is certified Double Platinum in Canada, and Gold in the US. it was also used in the Freeform pilot for Young and Hungry, the end credits of Bojack Horseman, Season 12 of Degrassi, and as the theme for an AT&T commercial.
which brings us to the end of another week. pour yourself an Apres-Episode beverage, watch the snow not fall (it's August) and once again if there's anything I've missed, gotten wrong, or could have explained better let me know, critiques, comments, compliments and corrections are more than welcome.

2020.08.20 19:34 cazamumba 31/F/Canada - Vancouver cartoonist looking for interesting stories from elsewhere. Lets escape this covid boredom somehow!

Hello! I'm a 31 year old living in Vancouver, BC. I'm a cartoonist by trade, working as a storyboard artist for kid's cartoon shows since 2012. I live with my partner and cat (Swayze) and got reaaaaally into gardening since covid started. My sunflowers are like 10 feet tall and I will talk about them if you let me. I also love cooking, singing, biking, camping, occasional video games, conspiring to save the planet, bored games and softball.
Looking for snail mail pals, but email would be okay too! Mostly want to share stories of how you're getting through this strange year and your hopes for how we can be better in the future. Lets trade gardening tips, recipes, songs, drawings, mathematical theories (i dont have any but maybe that's your thing?) and pictures of life's little moments. Nice to meet you!

2020.07.31 03:03 Tythen Listing the English VAs of Galaxi, and our new lucky vacationers in their Doomsday Getaway!

(Here, have some background music just for this occasion!!!)
Normally, every Monokuma theatre only takes about a few seconds or so, but I hope this won't take any longer than the ost! Anyway, I've been thinking a lot about 'voices'. Like recognising similar-looking actors in different movies, the same goes for voices. Regardless of what language is spoken or what voice direction is taken, there will always be some form of verbal tic, expression, or tone that will always tie back to its speaker. Turns out we've always been doing this ever since we were babies. By linking voices to their name or face, we identify others as our parents, siblings, friends, teachers, and what not!
Okay, enough sociolinguistics. Let's get back to our voices. As everyone here is an alt of their own form, I also assure you that the English actors are reprised. Only two of the five are current pseudonyms, Sinoa's and Konohana Sakuya's. That being said, unlike Mikoto or the rest of the main cast, the both of them remain to keep that name. So once again, I'd like to ask for your help if you can, recognising the voices. Let me introduce to you our new guests for the summer party of their lives!
Laxi - Anna Van Hooft. Anna Van Hooft is a live-action actress born in Canada. Always appearing mostly in live-action movies and tv shows. Notable examples include the Warcraft movie as Alloman, and an unnamed attendant in The Wickerman (not the bees!)
But for TV shows, she's appeared as one-time special guests like CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Witches of East End, Altered Carbon, Supernatural and Arrow. However, there is one where she had the role of a notable supporting character; Princess Aura from the 2007-8 live-action adaptation of Flash Gordon. Does anyone recognise the franchise?
Norwin - Adrian Petriw. This guy's a real charmer let me tell you. Why? Because whenever there's any sort of charming or tough-like character, this actor from Toronto's name comes up! Though he does appear in plenty of Live-action roles, his Animated Films and series convinced me to make this little joke! For Three barbie movies (two direct to video, one Netflix), he plays as Ken. Then he's played other 'charming' heroes like Hawkeye in Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow, and main character Tony Stark/Iron Man in 4-year running series Iron Man: Armoured Adventurers. Hanz Gordon from Little Battlers EXperience/Danball Senki, and supporting character Matt from Lolirock (a love interest for Auriana).
Now, other non-charming playboy characters include Tad (Dr Blakk's son) from Slugterra, Shu Kurenai from Beyblade Burst, Commander Gren from The Dragon Prince, Main character Adam from Netflix mystery animation The Hollow, Sagaru Yamazaki (ANPAN) from Gintama, and probably one of the most cutest kid educational shows, Scout from Scout and the Gumboot Kids.
Sinoa - Mae Matchett. She also voices Cerberus here. Mae is a pseudonym, and as much as I keep on searching any link to it, the only thing that appears on it is anything related with Dragalia Lost. I'd like your help here.
Konohana Sakuya - Joy Frender. Despite the pseudonym here, the stretch I can link her to is Alayna Joy. Why? Her normal name on YouTube is Alayna Joy while her Twitter handle is called MissFenderr. I know it's a stretch, but it's possible given that she's currently living in North Vancouver, British Colombia, Canada. Despite that, I'm still not convinced after comparing Rena and Konohana Sakuya's voices to some of her YouTube videos, but I hope you can help me here too. Like I said, this is a stretch, and I thought to ask her via a Tweet if she did any voice acting gigs. If she is or she's not, then I'll update this with all her information and what not. But again, I'd like to ask you to help.
Amane - Kazumi Evans. This is such a coincidence. The voice actor of Rarity and Princess Luna from My Little Pony was the first summer welfare unit (Summer Estelle). Now? The next summer welfare unit is voiced by the SINGING Actor of Rarity and Princess Luna!!! Born in Delta, BC, Canada and of Japanese descent (though it doesn't take a genius to know that), Kazumi first appeared on TV as a reality TV show Triple Sensation. She may not have won, but she began to kickstart her career through voice acting and singing.
As mentioned before, she's the singing actor for Rarity and Princess Luna from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. But this isn't her only role here in the MLP-verse. She also plays antagonist Adagio Dazzle in Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks, and background ponies Moondancer and Octavia Melody. She also voices the main character Iris in Lolirock (now instantly, Amane x Azazel comes to mind because the characters they voiced in Lolirock are a couple). Other roles include Queen Sarai (Callum's mother) in The Dragon Prince, Shani from Polly Pocket, Antagonist Nisha in The Hollow, and many more!!!
And that's that! Because of the awkward situation here, I won't be putting any of the pseudonymed names down, since they're not discovered yet. I will put down Norwin's, Laxi's and Amane's! What are your opinions about our English actors (and maybe should I change the flair from Other to Discussion? Or does listing voice actors not warrant a discussion?)
Voices voices voices... they really are a driving force. But it makes you wonder... in the age of technology, we communicate using messages and posts like these. Sometimes they are nice and constructive, sometimes they can be God-awful and just rude. A lot of people sometimes blame the internet for this sort of behaviour, mostly because everyone will have access to so many information, and everyone would have their voices heard, be it good or bad to others. But honestly, how different is it from real life? Whether on the train or in a cafe, someone will always have their voices loud for everyone to hear. Trolls on the internet can be trolls in real life and vice versa. I find it quite hard to maintain a selected face one from the other...

2020.04.09 09:00 silentsaturn91 On how I escaped

If this kind of post is not allowed, please feel free to delete it.
I originally wanted to throw a small party or something for myself since this year is a milestone year for me. I was kicked out for the final time by my adoptive dad on April 9th 2010, exactly 10 years ago to the date. Since the world is in a global quarantine right now, I can’t exactly celebrate the way I want to. So I figured this would be a good alternative. This story will be long. Please bare with me if you can.
I’m going to start off my story with some background info to help tie in everything for clarity sake.
It wasn’t until my mom was in her last few months of life that my adoptive dad’s true colours began to show. My mom died of stage 4 brain cancer when I was 12. She was one hell of a fighter, and I miss her to this very day. My dad and I were really starting to butt heads back then. I was 12, going through puberty, my mom was dying, and I had no idea what the fuck was going on. The info I’m about to share in this section came after I had escaped and started my life over. When my mom was planning out her own funeral, she wanted her funeral to be very similar to the one her dad had had when he died as her way of having her dad be a part of the service. Closer towards the end, dad tore up her plans and completely rewrote her funeral to something more of his liking. My mom wanted the organ in the church giving her a ceiling busting send off, instead, my dad hired an acoustic guitarist for the funeral and the organ was silent. My mom wanted an open casket for her viewing, but my dad told her that he didn’t want people to “see that he had a fat, dead wife” (the pain meds mom was on made her swell up due to side effects, and thankfully, this was a “battle” he lost. She had her open casket and looked beautiful laying in repose in her designer suit and vintage rhinestone jewelry.). He even went as far as not allowing my mother to be buried next to her father like she had wanted.
Dad also managed to successfully brain wash me against my moms family for 7 years. He had me convinced that her family, who are fiercely loyal and loving by nature, wanted to have me removed from my home and placed in foster care. My dad also had me thoroughly convinced that if I spoke to any of her family, that they would try to pump me for information, so he taught me how to avoid and deflect their questions. This is a family who rallied around my mom. Every single one of us, including all us kids, stepped up and did our part to take care of my mom. They drove her to appointments, made sure she was taking her meds (my aunt was a nurse, as was my mom), they would visit her, keep her company, comfort her, love her, help her get to the bathroom, the good, the bad, the ugly, and the grim. All of it. Yet in my dads mind, they were the devil incarnate. The morning after my mom passed away, my dad wrote a letter on the door that he made me sign stating that we were no longer a part of their lives, and that we may leave the country so he could go back to the states to be with his family. He would go on to use the threat of selling the house and forcibly moving me to the states, and forcing me to get American citizenship as a way to punish me or keep me in line. I haven’t been south of the border in 11 years and I honestly don’t know if I can ever go back. Canada is my home and I still hate him to this day for wanting to rip me away from my home and my country.
Through out my teen years, dad showed little to no interest in anything I was interested in, but would encourage me to explore talents and skills that either benefited him, or he personally enjoyed. Baking and singing being the main two. He also would play some serious cat and mouse games when it came to using the internet. I got really good at finding the modem when he would hide it from me. Dad never liked me being in the computer, and he would regularly spy on me, even going so far as to say that it was my fault that sexual predators were finding me. That was NEVER my fault. He would then punish me by threatening to kick me out, throw me into foster care, slam doors, scream, yell, call me names, and even said that I was the reason he sleeps with a baseball bat next to his bed.
I realize this is getting very long winded so I’ll leave this final piece of background info then I’ll jump into how I escaped. When I was 16 I was dating a fellow who was a little bit older than me, and we were sexually active. The guy I was dating was always insistent that condoms be used every single time, with out fail, no exceptions, and that is exactly what happened. One day I go down to do my laundry and for the longest time I couldn’t find 2 particular pairs of underwear so I went and asked dad if he had seen these pairs in question. Sometimes dad would wash some of my clothes if he was doing a load just to make sure the machine was full and we weren’t wasting water. He told me he had taken those two pairs and “had them sent off to a lab to be tested because they were covered in semen.” No, they weren’t. I told him that what he saw was vaginal discharge (which it was) and that that’s normal for a woman because it means my vagina is healthy. A few weeks later I found the underwear in question in a plastic bag down in the laundry room and that’s when I lost it. I marched upstairs and very angrily told him that he is never allowed to touch any of my underwear again. He was rather stunned when I confronted him like that, and I got lucky. No punishments. He never touched my underwear again.
Fast forward to January 14 2010. I just turned 19 4 days earlier and I get home from school to see a letter in the mail for me from the Ontario Adoption registrar. I had finally found my biological father! I contacted him and we hit it off instantly! Spoiler alert, we’ve been like 2 peas in a pod ever since. When I told my dad the news, that started a gradual break down of our relationship over the course of 3 months.
April 9th 2010. It was a Friday night and I was talking to my bio dad on skype before bed when dad disconnected the wifi downstairs. I waited until he went to the bathroom downstairs to sneak down and plug it back in. I quickly got back upstairs and told my bio dad what happened and he told me to call him if it happened again. The wifi got disconnected again so I quickly grabbed the phone to call my bio dad. Dad beat me to the punch and took the phone off the hook so I couldn’t dial out. I had had enough so I went to confront him. I told him if he didn’t hang up the phone right now, I was going to come downstairs and hang it up myself.
Dad jumped out of his chair and chased me out of the house. The second he jumped up, I knew if he caught me, he was going to beat me. He never hit me before, but I knew that that would be a first time. I immediately ran out the front door screaming for help. As I ran to the neighbours to get to a phone, dad called the cops and said that there was a crazy girl outside screaming for help. A neighbour was kind enough to let me use their phone to call my bio dads mom to come pick me up. I had to wait in the back of a police car until she came and got me. Dad put my things in a plastic bag and told the police I was not welcome back into the house with out a police escort.
There was no going back. The decision was made that I would move to BC to live with my bio dad, so a game plan was put in place.
With a police escort, I managed to pack up everything I could into an XL suitcase and a backpack, quit school, quit my job, said good bye to my friends, got all my necessary documentation, got on a plane, and flew from London ON to Vancouver BC.
I did this within 6 days. I started my life all over again on April 15th 2010. Over time, and with one hell of a step mom going to bat for me on the phone with my dad, I managed to successfully cut him out of my life, and most importantly, I got my moms family back. Every last one of them welcomed me back with open arms, especially my grandmother who has always been a second mom to me.
I got insanely lucky. I only wish more of us were as lucky as I was. If you’re wondering what’s going on with my life (besides being in lockdown), I’m happily married, and have a wonderful cuddle buddy (I’m polyamorous), my relationship with my bio and moms families are rock solid, hubby and I went to Japan for our honeymoon back in mid December and had an absolute blast, we have a nice little home, some money in the bank, we’re happy, healthy, thriving, and thinking about having kids one day.
I am still proud of myself for taking this leap of faith when I did. I honestly don’t think I’d be here today if I hadn’t done so. I hope all of you can find the same strength and courage inside of you like I did with myself. It’s in there. It’s waiting, and it is mighty❤️

2020.01.09 16:36 SoScaryiFarted Winnipeg vs Ontario Cities (pros, cons)

Here's a of review Winnipeg vs Cities in Ontario. I lived in Winnipeg for 11 years, and in 2018, moved to Ontario.
There are pros and cons to both places. At first I will review some pros of Winnipeg. Later in the post you will see pros of Ontario.
Sidenote: After leaving Winnipeg I am enjoying those +5 celcius January days in southern Ontario!
Cities:
Besides climate, I have gripe with Ontario's cities. Winnipeg 800k population, as a city is descent. There is everything you need in one place. It's affordable, and all inclusive. Basically like a smaller version of Toronto but much more affordable. The quality of living in Winnipeg is almost on par with Calgary, and Edmonton. Ontario on the other hand doesn't offer that. It's either super expensive Toronto/Mississauga, or it's a smaller city like London 400k population, or Dirty Hamilton 600k pop. North west Hamilton and Weastern part of London are descent. The other eastern halfs of the respective cities are simply run down crackhead fests. Winnipeg has bad areas, but more good neighbourhoods than bad ones. Winnipeg also offers that sense of large local community that you don't get when living in Ontario's smaller cities, because communities are broken up into small sections in Ontario, not including Toronto. Granted, Ontario has so many cities, that even if you don't like your city/town, you can go and explore other cities, or travel to Toronto. So you don't really feel trapped. But you don't get that comfortable all inclusive city feel that you get in Wpg. Still if I could afford living in Toronto, I would shut my petty little mouth, and live there in a heartbeat. If you can comfortibly live in Toronto, it's got more to offer than Wpg.
Climate:
Now let's talk about the climate, and environment. Winnipeg is really cold. It's January 9th, 2020. Winnipeg is around -20celcius. This is a typical everyday temperature for mid November to mid March... Yikes. Ontario on the other hand is experiancibg temperatures above 4 celcius. We already had temperatures above 10 celcius for a few days in December and January, and the weather forecast is saying we will have a few more of those +10 days in january! Plus it's around +4 most other days!
The difficulty of living in Winnipeg, a city that is -10, -20 everyday for 6 months per year is just that. It's too cold to go out of the house/building too often, so when the short summer comes, you emerge from your house like a pale vampire wakes up from hybernation. Hungry for life, Sun, trees, grass, birds singing. Venues fill up with people, where just a while ago there were only 6ft tall snowbanks. But the summer is so short that by the time October comes, temperature drops back to 0 celcius and your half living zombie body has to go back to your cave for another horrible 6 months. You never recover from such a harsh and long winter. Your body becomes so stressed out over time that people start having depression out of the blue, mental health, and other ailments.
Humans are made for reasonable temperatures. Our bodies hate extreme cold and we are psychologically beaten by it. No wonder why Stalin sent prisoners to Siberia! There people did all they could to survive, building small huts and shoveling snow in minus 30 for 8months of a year. Extreme cold and long winter is a sure way to break someones spirit and body. The people in Siberia died of natural causes after 10-15 years of living in such a harsh climate. Humans aren't made of steel, we are made of small cells that are filled with water like little balloons. We aren't naturally fat and have inch thick skin like polar bears, and sea lions. And we don't have thick fur coats. The clothing we wear pails in its ability to keep us warm, when compared to animals that live in the arctic.
Winnipegers opinions:
People in Winnipeg will tell you that you are a wimp if you say Winnipeg is too cold. But they are only denying the fact that their body just like everyone else's, needs a reasonable ammount of warmth, nature, and Sun, in order to be emotionally happy and satisfied with life.
Nature, Environmet, recreation:
Also let me mention that there is no nature in Manitoba. Winnipeg is surrounded by hundreds of kilomiters of empty praries. No cities around it for hundreds of horrible kilomiters! Forget about cities, not even trees. No not single natural hill or thick tree. All the trees are thin, and Bush-like. I belive any large oak planted in the city is taken from the States or warmer provinces like Ontario, because nothing can survive in that boring prarie flatter than the moon landscape. The only beaches are in lake Manitoba, which still sees melting snowbanks in late May, early June! The water is like 20 celcius even in August! That's freezing cold water! And you have to drive 100km to get there. The only warm beach is birds hill park 20min from the city. It's a small about 200 meter wide man-made pond. Every summer thousands of people go to birds hill, and fill up the large parking lots by the pond. The pond ends up being overcrowded with people. It was fun going there but that's the only descent beach in Manitoba pretty much, where water is warm.
Ontario on the other hand is teeming with beaches, waterfalls, trails, resourts, etc. Much more interesting in terms of nature, and recreation in Ontario. Lake earie has good beaches and the water there is very warm.
The country side in Ontario is much more diverse and has a lot more charecter. Nature in southern Ontario is similar to New York. It has that East Coast, New York state, Maine, Pynnsylvania, North Carolina vibe. Actually the forests of Ontario are called "Carolinian forest system". Because it stretches from Carolina, through New York State, and to Ontario. There are so many species of animals in Ontario that some of them I haven't seen ever in my life. Bright color birds, yellow, purple, blue, and red. So far I know the red one is a Cardinal. I've had raccoons make a mess of my garbage bins, also deer in my backyard. It's a party over here.
Education/job market:
Winnipeg: Winnipeg has University of Winnipeg, and the big one: University of Manitoba. These are very respected universities. Red River College, which I myself graduated from, is also a well known College in Canada. Job market in Manitoba is good for teachers, nurses, engineers, computer programmers, car mechanics, and seasonal construction type workers. I know people who worked in all those fields, and had no trouble finding work.
Ontario: Ontario has very well known Universities and colleges as well. University of Waterloo as one of the "silicon valley" grade universities. McMaster University in Hamilton is also pretty good. And the biggest of them all, Toronto University. Ontario has more to offer in-terms of education but it's not like Manitoba is lacking.
Getting a job as a teacher is harder in Ontario as you have to confirm your teaching license I believe, or something of that sort, if you are coming from another province. Any other job like engineer, aircraft maintenance engineer, nurse, car mechanic, those will be easy to find. My relatives got hired each at the respective jobs I listed, even before coming to Ontario. There is more competition in Ontario, and some jobs withought qualification are tougher to find. Employers are also more demanding of their workers in Ontario. As in they are stricter, and demand better results.
Conclusion:
Anyways, I still enjoy Ontario more than Manitoba. I feel closer to civilization here with cities like Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, New York, Detroit, Buffulo, Chicago, Cleveland, and more. All within a few hours drive, more or less. In the Praries you are secluded from the rest of the world. At least in Alberta there's Calgary and Edmonton. In BC there is Vancouver, Seattle nearby, and Alberta nearby. What's around Winterpeg? Crappy Saskatchewan? Minneapolis 800km away? If you want to lock yourself in a city for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, go to Winnipeg! The most popular province with 40% of Canadians living here is Ontario. It's simply got more to offer.
Leave your thoughts below! Do you think Winnipeg is better to live in than Ontario cities?

2019.11.04 22:44 Exchilada How do I get into University of British Columbia?

Hi! I'm trying to find out if I can get into UBC for undergrad. I hope someone can help me. I'm in 11th grade. I am a citizen of Canada, born in Vancouver, BC, however I am a resident of the U.S. I'm not sure what degree I want to get, but I'm leaning towards Media Technology or maybe Political Science. Can I get in with the following credentials?
-I have a 90 - 96% in every class with about a 3.7 GPA
- I've been involved in martial arts for years. I volunteer at my dojo and help teach kids classes. I should have a black belt by the time I graduate
-I have a few years of work experience including working in a doctor's office
-A couple years of foreign language (Spanish)
-Several high school electives including computer science and P.E. in almost every year
-A couple sources of community service
-I have a passion for music. I play guitar and sing and received a scholarship to an elite songwriting workshop in my sophomore year

Is this enough to get in? If not, what else should I do? Thanks!

2019.08.05 00:02 Steverinooo Legalization of all drugs

I am on record saying that I think all drugs, including heroin, should not only be decriminalized, but legal. Here is the way I see it. Because of the myriad of factors that comprise the War on Drugs, and the opioid epidemic, this will be quite long and cover a lot of ground. I would like for everyone to read it, but I will not be offended if you don’t.

The War on Drugs is an utter failure. This is not an opinion. This is fact. It is misguided and count- er-productive, with devastating consequences. And it ignores laws of human nature, supply and demand, and basic science. The first anti-drug laws in the United States were passed in 1914 - over 100 years ago. And what do we have to show for it? Prisons full of people, a disproportionate amount black and Latino. People overdosing, all too often fatally, in alleys, public rest rooms, and in bedrooms and basements. People needlessly contracting HIV, Hepatitis C, and other transmittable diseases. Increased crime and prostitution. In short, the results from waging a war for 100 years have been utterly disastrous.

What is the goal of this War on Drugs? In 2012, the United Nations issued a statement saying the war’s rationale is to build “a drug-free world - we can do it!” This is foolish. What exactly is “a drug-free world”? Is it one without anesthetics? No epidurals? No pain-killers? No high blood-pressure medi- cine? No chemotherapy? No aspirin? No alcohol or nicotine? I am trying to be civil. I think one can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. But seriously, what bureaucratic lunatic in the UN issued such a statement? Is the goal to eradicate poppy plants, coca plants, marijuana and psilocybin mushrooms from the face of the earth? Get real! It isn’t going to happen. Is the goal to make everyone on the planet understand that these drugs are bad for you and you shouldn’t do them? Again, wake up! It will never happen. This message is falling on deaf ears. A recent Center for Disease Control and Prevention study showed that over 50% of adults in the US has tried pot.

Humans have been getting high, stoned, drunk and intoxicated for millennia. It is human nature. “That humanity at large will ever be able to dispense with Artificial Paradise seems very unlikely. Most men and women lead lives at the worst, so painful, and at the best, so monotonous, poor and limited, that the urge to escape, the longing to transcend themselves if only for a few moments, is, and always has been, one of the principal appetites of the soul.” Aldous Huxley wrote that back in 1951. I will take it a step further. It is not just human nature. It is animal nature. Getting inebriated occurs throughout the animal kingdom, too, from primates to cats to elephants to birds and to insects. To try to stop this is both futile and short-sighted. Besides, who says these drugs are bad for you? Psychedelic drugs such as LSD, mushrooms and DMT are mind-expanding. The “bad” trips that you read about are mainly overblown and government propaganda. And they are rarely addictive. Other drugs alleviate pain. I could be mistaken, but aren’t all medicines drugs? These medicines are lab-tested, refined, tested again and again and again. They are only approved for use after a panel of experts deems the benefits of the medicine (drug) outweigh the side-effects. But make no mistake: they all have side-effects. And they can be harmful if not taken properly.

Instead of simply trying to keep drugs out of the bodies and minds of people, we need to admit that the approach we have been taking is not working. We need to ask questions. We need to get to the roots of the issues, and not just say, “They are bad for you. Don’t do them or we will lock you up.” We need to ask, “Why do people do drugs? What causes addiction? Can addiction be overcome? If so, how?

When I just now asked “What causes addiction?” you probably laughed and said, “Well shit! The drug causes addiction. Any fool know that. If you take this stuff long enough - BOOM! - before you know it, you’re hooked.” That is what most people think. That is what I used to think. That is what has been spoonfed to us since childhood. Well not so fast. Opiates can play a role in addiction. The size of that role is open to debate. But it is by no means the only factor. Many scientists in the field think it is not even the major factor. It all depends on how people’s brains are wired. And why they are wired the way they are.

People think addicts are addicts because of the heroin or cocaine or the meth. They ingest these evil drugs into their system and then get hooked. But what about other addicts? Many people are addicted to gambling. Are they snorting poker chips? What about people addicted to shopping? Or video games? Or sex? None of these involve injecting, smoking or snorting anything into your body. Yet these people are still addicts. Alcohol, heroin, cocaine and nicotine do have addictive properties. But not everyone who drinks is an alcoholic. I knew a co-worker who only smoked on weekends when he went out for a few drinks. Throughout the rest of the week, he did not smoke. And not everyone who takes opiates becomes an addict. My mother and two of my brothers have all had two back surgeries each. My mother has also had a knee replacement. I have co-workers that have had knee replacements and other major surgeries. Friends, too. They have all been prescribed pain killers, some strong (oxycontin) and some not quite as potent (Vicodin and Percoset). None of them have become addicts. None. There is more to addiction than the drug.

There is a research scientist named Bruce Alexander. Years ago he read the results of studies that showed rats, when offered a choice between a bottle of water, and a bottle of water with morphine, invariably chose the water with morphine, to the point where many of them died. He decided to conduct his own variations of this experiment. Previous studies always had a solitary rat in a cage. He did the same experiment. And the solitary rats chose the morphine solution. But he also constructed a different set-up. This cage, called Rat Park, included tunnels, exercise wheels, wood shavings, and had multiple rats of both sexes. It was Rat Heaven. Rats in the solitary cages consumed up to 25 milligrams of morphine a day. But the rats in Rat Park consumed less than 5 milligrams a day. Alexander even had a set of rats consume the morphine solution for 57 consecutive days. He then placed them in Rat Park. They had the option of water or water with morphine. The rats twitched for a while (withdrawal symptoms) and then stopped drinking the morphine solution. It is not simply the drug. It is also the environment.

Okay, so why do some people drink and become alcoholics, and others do not? Why do some people do drugs and become addicts, and others do not? Why do some people gamble but can walk away from the table, and others lose fortunes and ruin lives? Why do some people play video games non-stop, yet others can put the PlayStation down? Some experts believe it is the way the brain was wired during the forma- tive years. People suffering from autism, ADD and ADHD are more prone to addiction than others. A large percentage of addicts are victims of physical and sexual abuse. Scientists theorize that while some people do not get addicted, many that do, do so because they are masking pain. They have a difficult time coping with trauma, fear, neglect, social exile, trust and similar issues. The drug becomes a coping mechanism. Before you start scoffing at me, accusing me of becoming a sentimental softie, think about it. Something causes addiction. It is not just the drug. To me, it is fairly obvious that addiction is a coping mechanism. They don’t shoot up because it is cool. There is a reason behind the addiction Some addicts say when they do heroin, it is like a warm, soft hug. One addict said when she first did heroin, “It is what I had been looking for my entire life.”

It is also very important to understand that addicts are not losers. Morality has absolutely nothing to do with addiction. “But Steve, these addicts are criminals! They are losers! They’re breaking the law. They’re throwing their lives away. And for what?” Well, the only reason they are criminals, is because we have made them criminals. We passed ill-advised laws making it criminal activity to do what they are doing. Why? One has to ask; for some action to be criminal, doesn’t there have to be a victim? If I purchase pot, go into my basement, and smoke it, am I harming anyone? If I drive impaired, that is different. That would be comparable to driving while under the influence of alcohol. But smoking weed in my own basement? Isn’t that like drinking a glass or two of wine on my back porch? Or are these addicts evil? Amoral? Bad people? The most famous nurse in the history of the world, Florence Nightingale, was a morphine addict. The man who gave us Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities, and A Christmas Story, Charles Dickens, was also a morphine addict Dickens was a crusader for the homeless, the destitute and orphans. Yet he was an addict. There was a physician named William Halstedt. He was one of the four physicians who founded John Hopkins Hospital. He made revolutionary advancements in the treatment of breast cancer, greatly reducing the recidivism rate. He made advancements in blood transfusions. He has been called the Father of Modern Surgery. And he did 180 milligrams of morphine every day for decades. Today, we would throw someone like that in prison. Sad. Again, morality has nothing to do with addiction. Addiction is a coping mechanism.

The reason addicts become “losers” is because of the prohibition of these drugs. Having these drugs illegal makes things worse. These drugs are not illegal because they are dangerous. They are dangerous because they are illegal. The illegality of drugs has created a black market for them, one that cannot be controlled. Prohibition of alcohol didn’t work. What makes anyone think that prohibition of marijuana, cocaine or heroin will work? Did I mention that over 50% of adults in the US has tried marijuana?

During alcohol prohibition in the US, bootleggers produced millions of gallons of rotgut moonshine and bathtub gin. Much of this was produced from industrial alcohol. The federal government required com- panies to denature industrial alcohol to make it undrinkable. Then it ordered quinine and methyl alcohol to be added as an additional deterrent. Some estimates maintain that these poisonous mixtures killed more than 10,000 people. In one incident alone, in Kansas City, more than 500 people were permanently crippled. The United States federal government was intentionally harming and killing its citizens in a misguided effort to keep them from drinking. How can anyone think that the War on Drugs will have a different outcome? Scientific studies indicate that the most harmful aspect of drugs, is not the drug itself, but our prohibition of them. This is not to say that heroin, cocaine, crystal meth and other narcotics are harmless. Of course they can be dangerous. But one of the main reasons for their catastrophic consequences is because we have made them illegal. We cannot control the source of them. We cannot control the quantities of them. We cannot control the distribution. And we cannot control the products themselves. Criminals can cut the drugs with whatever similar-looking powders they can find; brick dust, bleach crystals and the like. And then they lace it with fentanyl, and now, carfentanil. The result is a chemical concoction that is often fatal. I do not have statistics to back up this claim, but I don’t think many addicts are dying because of heroin overdoses. They are dying because of heroin laced with fentanyl and even more potent opiates.

So what is the answer? The solution lies in what is called “harm reduction.” The drugs are not going away, no matter how hard we try and how much money we throw into this war. Instead of waging this war, let’s shift our goal and try to reduce the harm these drugs can cause. This is achieved by decriminal- izing, if not legalizing, all drugs. Let’s admit that prohibition does not work. People will get these drugs regardless of their illegality. In fact, they are more likely to get them when they are illegal. Have you ever had a teenager approach you and ask you to buy him/her alcohol? I will admit that it has only happened to me once or twice. But it has happened. Or maybe you were the teenager asking an adult to buy you alcohol. But has anyone ever approached you and asked you to buy him/her heroin? Crystal meth? Cocaine? No. And do you know why? Because they don’t need you to buy it for them. They can get it on their own down on the street corner or in an alley. But can they get alcohol in that alley? Is there some guy standing in an alley saying, “Hey kid. Wanna buy a Bud Light? You don’t like Bud Light? I have Coors and Miller Genuine Draft, too.” It doesn’t happen. Why? Because beer is legal. It is regulat- ed. The source is controlled. The distribution is controlled. The quantities are controlled. And the product (content and percentage of alcohol) is controlled. The same cannot be said of heroin.

There should be something called Supervised Injection Sites (SIS) where addicts can come in without fear of being arrested, and receive medically prescribed and supervised doses of heroin, cocaine, etc. These should be standard practice. Lest anyone think I have lost my marbles, these policies have already been tried and proven effective. In the 1980’s and 1990’s, John Marks opened a supervised injection site in Merseyside, England. A study was conducted over an 18-month span and results showed that there was a 93% drop in theft, burglary and property crimes. HIV infection rate among drug users was zero. Most importantly, the fatality rate was zero. Zero! There was also a decrease in new users. Many users found permanent employment and housing. 60 Minutes got wind of this and aired a story on this. The US administration took issue with this approach (one can only ask why) and pressured Margaret Thatcher to shut it down. And it was. Addicts went back on the streets, resumed their criminal activities and prostitu- tion, and died. From 1982 to 1995, Dr. Marks treated 450 addicts, and did not have a single drug-related fatality. Six months after being shut down, 20 were dead. 41 were dead within two years.

There are well over a hundred SIS in Europe. My personal physician, who is Spanish, told me they even have them at concerts, knowing that people will be doing drugs, so they may as well mitigate the dangers. Until recently, there was only one SIS in North America - in Vancouver, BC. It is run by a Hungari- an-born Jewish doctor named Gabor Maté. (If you have some time, google his name and watch a video or two, especially his Ted talk. If you get really ambitious, read his book In The Realm Of Hungry Ghosts.) But Toronto’s City Council passed a resolution to add five such centers. And earlier this year, Philadelphia approved measures to open the first SIS in the United States. I can hear you now. “Having these sites is ridiculous. You are being an enabler. And if the government is giving this to people, drug usage is sure to skyrocket.” I am not going to bore you with details (there are certain stipulations associated with these sites), but in places such as Switzerland, where they have them, and in Portugal, where all drugs have been decriminalized, this does not appear to be the case. Besides, I would rather be an enabler and let these people live to see another day, and maybe, eventually turn their lives around, than turn my back on these people and let them suffer, and, as shown in Merseyside, die. Remember, addiction is not a reflection on someone’s morality or lack of. These are people. Children. Spouses, Siblings. Parents. Even if it did reflect lack of morality, aren’t we supposed to help one another? Or do we let them die?

Many people fear legalizing drugs is paving the way for a free for all. People everywhere will be doing drugs. Nothing could be further from the truth. As I see it, a free for all is what we have now. Unknown drug dealers selling unknown drugs to unknown consumers in unknown places. Do drug dealers check the IDs of the people they are selling to? Yet legalizing these products, regulating their content, restrict- ing distribution to only licensed vendors, and checking IDs of the consumers is paving the way for bedlam? What am I missing? How is this not better than our current policies?

Portugal decriminalized all drugs in 2001. Statistics from multiple sources all point to a reduction in drug use since this went into effect. Drug-induced deaths have decreased substantially. So has the HIV infec- tion rate. The same holds true in Switzerland, where addicts are treated at health clinics and yes, at SIS. Since implementing the sites in 1994, there has been a significant decrease in all harm-related statistics. Deaths are down. HIV, Aids and Hepatitis have gone down. Unemployment among addicts has gone down. We have to ask ourselves here in the States, why should we continue our current policies when there are better, proven alternatives? Why are we so firmly planted in our stance for eradicating drug use? We are causing more harm by keeping them illegal. A physician in Portugal said, “I prefer moderate hope and some likelihood of success over the dream of perfection and a promise of failure.”

If we ever want to rehabilitate addicts, then we have to stop locking them up in prison. Incarceration, lock-up rehab facilities, and the like create an atmosphere completely opposite to one that would help the addict. A caring environment should be the cornerstone of any rehab policy, not our current policy of criminalization and incarceration. I recently finished re-reading a book. At the conclusion, the author writes, “The opposite of addiction is not sobriety. It’s connection. If you are alone, you cannot escape addiction. If you are loved, you have a chance. For a hundred years we have been singing war songs about addicts. All along, we should have been singing love songs to them. One thing has potential - more than any other - to kill this attempt at healing. It is the drug war. If these people I love are picked up by the police during a relapse, and given a criminal record, and rendered unemployable, then it will be even harder for them to build connections with the world. And if that happens, then they will be lost....... It shouldn’t be this way - and it doesn’t have to be.”

Before I wrap this up, I want to elaborate again on the nature of addiction. I said previously that morality plays no part in addiction. Neither does choice, or one’s level of intelligence. I have read letters written to newspapers or posted on-line in which many people hurl insults at addicts. I read one just the other day in which a woman said she has no sympathy for addicts. It was their choice to do the drugs. She said she was all for resuscitating an addict with Narcan - one time. She wrote, “Everyone has the right to be stupid once.” Obviously, she does not understand addiction. Intelligence and choice do not play a part. Regarding relapse, Humberto Fernandez, in his matter of fact, straightforward book, “Heroin, It’s History, Pharmacology and Treatment” states that this viewpoint is held by many legislators and law enforcement officials, but from a health care perspective, the measure of effective drug treatment must be viewed in the context that addiction is, by definition, a chronic disease, and that the addict is susceptible to relapse. Mr. Fernandez goes on to say that while a parolee who relapses will be classified as a recidivist by law enforcement, the drug counselor will examine whether or not the addict has demonstrated progress in other areas of his life, such as holding down a job, staying away from other criminal activity, and the length of sobriety before the relapse. Addiction is a lifelong battle. One is never “cured.” Medication assisted treatment, a valuable tool in fighting harmful addictions, can last years, or even decades, further evidence of the chronic nature of addiction.

Last year, I wrote this rebuttal to someone who resorted to name-calling when speaking about addicts: Tell the four boys whose mother fatally overdosed after being addicted to prescription pain-killers follow- ing a medical procedure that their mother was a “clown.” Tell that to the countless addicts who are victims of physical and sexual abuse. Tell that to the addicts who suffer from ADHD, autism and other emotional and personality disorders. And tell the parents who have lost children because of overdose and suicide that their loved ones are “clowns.” I gladly welcome any discussion on this topic. Despite the length of this column, it is much, much shorter than I would have liked. There are so many things on which I wanted to elaborate. And many things I omitted completely. I hope everyone read this with an open mind. I used to think the War on Drugs was a noble cause. Just say “No.” DARE. “This is your brain. This is your brain on drugs”. But the more I read, the more I realized how ill-advised it is. And what makes it even more absurd, is that we perpetuate these erroneous beliefs.

I thank you for reading this.

2019.07.18 10:26 Cassie_HU EYE OF THE STORM WORLD TOUR 2019 - VIP report - Crystal Ballroom, Portland, OR, July 17, 2019

I don't have a website. I do have a subreddit. So many emotions running through my head right now.
So, I got my hands on the meet and greet tickets for the Crystal Ballroom show in Portland. This was the first night of the little mini tour that they're doing around Warped tour, and I was super happy about this because Portland was left out during the initial US leg of Eye Of The Storm. Obviously, getting to finally see them was pretty nice. I was also happy that it was at the Crystal in particular - I have seen two shows there before tonight, and the bouncy floor makes it my favorite to rock out on.
I got to the venue probably about 4 o'clock (the email for Portland asked about 4:45-5:00 (Portland tickets got two, one from Cascade tickets (etix), one from Warner, and these were the times it gave)), so by then there was already a tiny bit of a line. To my surprise, the merch ATM was located outside. It only contained two items, a dad hat and a fanny pack. The exclusive prize from when it was outside was a VIP ticket. The fanny pack appeared to give more, but I didn't buy anything out of it - I wouldn't wear the cap probably (I'm not a hat type of person) and don't have use for the fanny pack. The best part of the experience of the merch atm was that I got to see a young Japanese girl (currently visiting neighboring Vancouver, not to be confused for Vancouver, BC) win a VIP ticket. The VIP line was overjoyed.
Around 4:30, before they let us in, they came out with the lanyards and the CD. crosswithyou mentioned that at the M&G in Vancouver (BC) that they were given the CDs inside the venue. This might vary from venue to venue, but we definitely got them outside. We were let in at around 5 pm.
The meet and greet took place in Lola's room. Lola's room is a little room sectioned off from the Crystal Ballroom, that holds meetings, has drinks at the bar, and does hold some concerts in it (Miyavi will be playing in Lola's room in the 27th, I believe). The pictures were taken directly in front of the bar, with no ONE OK ROCK wallpaper behind it. Unfortunately, this certain M&G didn't have much time to it. Maybe it was because the doors were supposed to be at 6, maybe it was because of the amount of people (the VIP line curled around 3 walls and then went down the stairs, so there were quite a few VIP tickets sold, not to mention the ones from the Merch ATM), but I didn't really get too much time to do anything except hug the members (Taka does give the best hugs), say hi to them, and take the pictures. My pictures are completely ruined by my resting bitch face (aka I look absolutely pissed), but it's going to be something to laugh about later since they're all so happy in the photos. Hopefully the Cali dates have more time to do Meet and Greet.
We were let upstairs around 5:50. I bought the blue shirt pictured in this insta post (These are my pictures - the blue one is the one on the far right, it is hard to tell that it is blue due to the light. Thanks to crosswithyou for posting them and spreading them, much appreciation to her). I can't complain about the two new shirts, they look nice. Unfortunately, no tour dates, but that's no bother.
The most boring part is the waiting. I will never understand why the Crystal Ballroom opens doors 90 minutes before the show, and I believe it's absolutely ridiculous. However, during this time, I noted the light fixtures (this picture was taken during the Weathers set. More on them later). At this time, I thought, "Oh shit, Weathers is pulling a Waterparks." How wrong I was. During this time, a few of my friends joined me at the concert, so I wasn't going to be doing this alone at least.
At 7:30, Weathers comes onto stage. Now, personally, I don't remember like, any of the song's names, other than "Poser" and whatever the nineteen eighties one was, as well as "Problems" and "Happy Pills" as I had listened to them before I saw them. They're much better live than in the studio, and their drummer is pretty good. The best part of their set was the epic drum solo that lead into a shortened cover of "Famous Last Words" by My Chemical Romance. The emo in me screamed. They were wrapped up by about 8:15, so they played for 45 minutes. All in all, they're a crazy live show, and have amazing stage presence.
A few minutes after Weathers wrapped up their set, I realized that they hadn't used the light fixtures at all. Which made me realize that ONE OK ROCK themselves took inspiration from the lights that Waterparks had used during their set. I was kind of scared, kind of excited to see what they were going to do with the lights.
And the display was amazing. I will warn you, the lights during "The Beginning" may hurt people with epilepsy, but other than that, the way the lights were used for this set was amazing. You'd have to see it to believe it (I have videos on my phone, I will upload my videos of "Push Back" and "The Beginning", I think they were the best).
The set for this tour will be the same as The European tour (So American tour's but with Taking Off AND Mighty Long Fall added (MLF was notably missing on the first American leg) and Giants in place of Grow Old Die Young). I'm not going to write everything out in detail but here's some highlights.
"Push Back" sounded very crisp, as in definitely better than the videos on the internet.
The jumping during "Taking Off" was fun. It was one of the most active moments that the crowd had, where almost everyone was included.
Taka held the long note on "Clock Strikes" for TWENTY-THREE seconds. That's insane!
Stand Out Fit In was fun to jump to live as well. Taka got everyone in the crowd to jump for the final chorus, which again, is something I like.
Taka slipped during "I Was King" and ended up doing a backwards somersault. He recovered nicely, but unfortunately the mic turned off in the process, and the trip had ended up being right before the final chorus. He added a cute little, "I tripped" after the song though, and brushed it off quite nicely, considering how embarrassing a trip like that had to have been.
The light show during "The Beginning". Very flashy. Again, will upload video.
Taka came out into the crowd during "Jaded". He ended up on top of the barrier between the all ages crowd and the 21+ bar crowd. It was fun to see him sing from up there, and I have that on video too.
Taka called for a wall of death on "Mighty Long Fall". Portland's mosh pits are amazing. Nearly lost my glasses, but they're okay, and I'm okay, would mosh to "Mighty Long Fall" again. And of course, we can't forget Taka's screams!
Of course Taka took out his phone after "Wasted Nights". I'm on camera somewhere. Cool.
I'm really happy I got to go though, and at least meet the band for a tiny bit. I'd hope it'd be better next time though. If you're in California or Mexico, go see them! They were fucking insane tonight.
