Proclamation of Independence 1957

2020.08.31 03:20 Tinderium Proclamation of Independence 1957

Speech and declaration : Transcript of YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman’s speech as follows:
Your Majesties, Your Royal Highnesses, Your Highnesses, Your Excellencies, People of Persekutuan Tanah Melayu.
I am indeed proud that on this, the greatest day in Malaya’s history it falls to my lot to proclaim the formal independence of this country. Today as new page is turned, and Malaya steps forward to take her rightful place as a free and independent partner in the great comity of nations – a new nation is born and though we fully realize that difficulties and problems lie ahead, we are confident that, with the blessing of God, these difficulties will be overcome and that today’s events, down the avenues of history, will be our inspiration and our guide. It is therefore with a feeling of particular solemnity that we have listened to the eloquent words of His Royal Highness and in particular to the moving message he has conveyed from Her Majesty the Queen. We are indeed honored that Her Majesty should have deputed her own uncle, His Royal Highness, to be with us on this occasion particularly when we remember that he is no stranger to this land: We recall too with pleasure his previous visit to Malaya and happy recollections of his stay have remained with us.
His Royal Highness has spoken in moving words of the past associations of our two countries. We in Malaya have a long history, but we do not lightly forget old relationships.
For many years past our fortunes have been linked with those of Great Britain and we recall in particular the comradeship of two world wars. We remember too the products of our association; justice before the law, the legacy of an efficient public service and the highest standard of living in Asia. We shall therefore always remember with gratitude the assistance which we have received from Great Britain down our long path to nationhood; an assistance which culminated today with the proclamation of Malaya’s independence.
But the long-standing friendship between our countries does not cease with independence: Rather it takes on a new form. As you have heard in the gracious message from Her Majesty the Queen, Malaya will henceforward take her place in the great Commonwealth of Independent Nations whose members are found in all parts of the world, and as an equal partner in that great association. We in this country will do all in our power to promote its well-being in the interests of mankind in general and in the particular service of world peace.
Thus today a new chapter opens in our relationship with Britain; our colonial status has given place to full equality but we are confident that, fortified by old associations, and linked by old memories, our ties with Britain will grow ever stronger and more durable.
British will ever find in us her best friend, and it is a source of much gratification to my government that British civil servants will continue to serve in this country to assist us in the solution of the many problems which independence will present.
But while we think of the past, we look forward in faith and hope to the future; from henceforth we are masters of our destiny, and the welfare of this beloved land is our own responsibility: Let no one think we have reached the end of the road: Independence is indeed a milestone, but it is only the threshold to high endeavor — the creation of a new and sovereign state. At this solemn moment therefore I call upon you all to dedicate yourselves to the service of the new Malaya: To work and strive with hand and brain to create a new nation, inspired by the ideals of justice and liberty — a beacon of light in a disturbed and distracted world.
High confidence has been reposed in us; let us unitedly face the challenge of the years.
And so with remembrance for the past, and with confidence in the future, under the providence of God, we shall succeed.
PROCLAMATION OF INDEPENDENCE: IN THE NAME OF GOD, THE COMPASSIONATE, THE MERCIFUL. PRAISE BE TO GOD, THE LORD OF THE UNIVERSE AND MAY THE BLESSINGS AND PEACE OF GOD UPON HIS messengers. Whereas the time has now arrived when the people of the Persekutuan Tanah Melayu will assume the status of a free independent and sovereign nation among the nations of the World.
AND WHEREAS by an agreement styled the Federation of Malaya Agreement, 1957, between Her Majesty the Queen and Their Highness the Rulers of the Malay states it was agreed that the Malay states of lohore, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, Kedah, Perlis, Kelantan, Trengganu and Perak and the former Settlements of Malacca and Penang should as from the 31st day of August, 1957, be formed into a new Federation of States by the name of Persekutuan Tanah Melayu.
AND WHEREAS it was further agreed between the parties to the said agreement that the Settlements of Malacca and Penang aforesaid should as from the said date cease to form part of Her Majesty’s dominions and that Her Majesty should cease to exercise any sovereignty over them.
AND WHEREAS it was further agreed by the parties aforesaid that the Federation of Malaya Agreement, 1948, and all other agreements subsisting between Her Majesty the Queen and Their Highness the Rulers or anyone of them immediately before the said date should be revoked as from that date and that all powers and jurisdiction of Her Majesty or of the Parliament of the United Kingdom in or in respects of the Settlements aforesaid or the Malay States or the Federation as a whole should come to an end.
AND WHEREAS effect has been given in the Federation of Malaya Agreement, 1957, by Her Majesty the Queen, Their Highnesses the Rulers, the Parliament of the United Kingdom and Legislatures of the Federation and of the Malay States.
AND WHEREAS a constitution for the government of the Persekutuan Tanah Melayu has been established as the supreme law thereof.
AND WHEREAS by the federal constitution aforesaid provision is made to safeguard the rights and prerogatives of Their Highness the Rulers and the fundamental rights and liberties of the people and to provide for the peaceful and orderly advancement of the Persekutuan Tanah Melayu as a constitutional monarchy based on parliamentary democracy.
And whereas the federal constitution aforesaid having been approved by an Ordinance of the Federal Legislatures, by the Enactments of the Malay states and by resolutions of the legislatures of Malacca and Penang has come into force on the 31st day of August, 1957, aforesaid.
Now in the name of God the Compassionate, the Merciful, I, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Abdul Hamid Halimshah, prime minister of the Persekutuan Tanah Melayu, with the concurrence and approval of Their Highnesses the Rulers of the Malay States do hereby proclaim and declare on behalf of the people of the Persekutuan Tanah Melayu that as from the 31st day of August, 1957 the Persekutuan Tanah Melayu comprising the states of Lohore, Pahang, Negri Sembilan, Selangor, Kedah, Perlis, Kelantan, Trengganu, Perak, Malacca and Penang is and with God’s blessing shall be forever a sovereign democratic and independent state founded upon the principles of liberty and justice and ever seeking the welfare and happiness of its people and the maintenance of a just peace among all nations.

2020.02.09 22:05 justgnnathrow How did you move to EU? I’m [22F] trying to shrink the gap by moving to EU to be closer to him [M25]

Hello!
I’m currently in need for some advice from those non-EU folks who managed to move to Europe!
I’m trying to make the gap smaller by moving to Europe (partner is currently in Switzerland). I just resigned from a job and had to move back home for health reasons.
Now that I have that sorted out, we’re trying to find ways to make the gap smaller by having me move to EU - I’d love to hear of your stories to see if I might have forgotten / overlooked a potential route!
I’m currently looking for a job that could sponsor me... so fingers crossed! But if anyone else has any leads then that’d be great!
Edit: + information! + clarity!
I’m from Indonesia. I do hold a Bachelor’s in Finance, and a joint Master degree - one in Business Administration (Strategy), and one in International Management.
I have done consulting internships since undergrad, and previously (last 1.5 years) I was doing part-time pro-bono consulting for non-profits (mostly in strategy), and was doing a full-time, full-sales cycle job for a software company in China.
I’m fluent in Bahasa Indonesia / Melayu and English. Additionally, I am a B2 in Mandarin Chinese, B1 in Korean, and an A2 (hopefully? I’ll find out next week!) in German.

2016.11.04 08:31 hughmcf [Event] Australasian Involvement in the Grand European War

Following a Russian backed Romanian invasion of Bulgaria and the resulting Euro-American response, Europe has been well and truly engulfed in war. As large military forces begin to clash, the conflict proves to be only getting worse. In Australasia, a nation far from the sounds of war, the conflict has manifested itself on the streets of major cities, where first and second generation migrants clash, representing their own nations and cultures. The effects of the war have also been seen in the economy, as a global recession and a downturn in trade volume with major partners such as the United States and European Federation causes serious financial issues for the average Australasian.
Approximately 20% of Australasian exports go to the United States and European Federation. With the war causing great uncertainty in global markets, this has decreased to about 12%. In response to this, the Australasian federal government shall provide a $45 billion PCD stimulus package to be spread across major export industries in order to preserve economic growth and financial stability. Economists with good memories have drawn similarities between this plan and the stimulus package provided to an ailing private sector in 2008 due to the Global Financial Crisis. It is hoped that the downturn in trade with the West may be replaced with ASEAN states, in particular, Melayu Raya, which has emerged as a prosperous economy in recent years.
However, the government in Canberra is not only taking economic actions, but also military ones. Already, small contingents of Australasian forces have moved into what was once European Federation territory in order to ensure that manned and unmanned scientific stations are adequately supplied and maintained. It seems clear that Australasia will not rescind its sovereignty over these regions.
In addition to these maneuvers, as the United States is forced to withdraw much of its naval forces from the Pacific Ocean, Australasia has negotiated an agreement with Washington to temporarily take over American roles in the region. Australasia as an ally of the United States, shall take the reins on regular, peacetime patrols across the Pacific so that American vessels can be deployed elsewhere. This will not mean that Australasia has taken any sort of official side in the conflict, although many strategic analysts point out that it is de facto support for America. In order to support this deployment, all Australasian vessels still remaining around Papua New Guinea have been withdraw, besides 5 patrol boats. The new deployment to the Pacific is as follows:
[S: To the European Federation] You of all nations, will be requiring the most in the way of raw materials to fuel your war machine. We are happy to undergo negotiations with you in order to secure some sort of special agreement to provide you with extra resources, possibly similar to the Lend Leases of the Second World War.
[S: To Melayu Raya and the SAU] We must hold an emergency conference so as to establish what our position in this conflict should be, and how we would act if we are forced to chose a side.

2016.10.27 09:29 hughmcf [Conflict] Securing Papua New Guinea

After Papua New Guinea was declared an absolute monarchy, following an apparent coup d'etat by former Prime Minister, Benjamin Moran, an international coalition of nations, consisting of Australasia, the United States, Melayu Raya and Fiji was formed with the goal of dismantling the illegal regime. First, foreign nationals within the country were evacuated, followed by the temporary relocation of the Pacific Union's legislative capital in Moresby to Brisbane. After this, a blockade was imposed on the Pacific nation whilst an ultimatum was offered. This deal was quickly rejected by the King, prompting the coalition to commence surgical airstrikes against military assets, accompanied by a campaign to seize valuable positions adjacent to the Melayu Rayan border.
These actions have crippled the military infrastructure in Papua New Guinea, whilst leaving the civilian populace remarkably untouched. 1,400 of the remaining members of the Papua New Guinean Army, who have received extremely limited equipment and training, have been stationed in the capital, Port Moresby, with another 500 being spread across the rest of the country in major population centers. With the war still ongoing, the international coalition shall continue to pursue its goal of toppling Moran's regime, primarily for the sake of the people of Papua New Guinea.
As such, Australasia wishes to provide its coalition partners with new orders for the purpose of securing Papua New Guinean territory. The military actions shall take place as described below:
Australasia hopes that our partners in the coalition are willing to accept these orders. Once again, we also encourage foreign nationals still inside Papua New Guinea to seek shelter in their embassy or, if this is not possible, to find safety away from any military targets. The coalition will place an enormous focus on avoiding as much damage to the life and property of the civilian populace as possible. This war is against Moran's illegal government, not the innocent people who have suffered under his wrath.
Finally, whilst these military actions take place, we invite Moran's administration to the peace table to discuss a solution to the conflict. The keys to peace lay in his hands, lest more people lose their lives.

2016.10.22 13:54 hughmcf [Diplomacy] Ultimatum to Papua New Guinea

[Public knowledge]
Approximately a year ago, the nation of Papua New Guinea, formerly a close ally of Australasia, embarked on a new path of radical policies, shifting from a corrupt but still free nation, to a nation on the path to dictatorship. Its dramatic turn for the worse started with a deliberate and unapologetic campaign to relocate ethnic minorities off of mineral rich land. Despite widespread international condemnation of this policy, the Papua New Guinean government continued its reign of terror, using forest fires, poison, military force and outright trickery to remove the native peoples from their land. In an apparent retaliation for this injustice, a bomb was set off in Port Moresby, killing all 34 members of the government's cabinent. Following this, a power vacuum emerged, which was filled by the opportunistic Benjamin Moran, who became the new Prime Minister.
Under Moran's leadership, the nation soon commenced a rapid militarisation project, with all men and women over the age of 19 being required to undergo six months of military training. It was this action which set off alarm bells in Canberra, since it was only mere months after Port Moresby ignored international pressure to stop its ethnic cleansing project. Following this, a new cabinet was instituted, before each and every member was arrested in an apparent coup d'etat, led by Moran. Since then, Moran has declared himself King over all Papua New Guinea; a bizarre development to say the least.
After about a year of pushing the boundaries, Port Moresby has finally crossed the line. The nations of the Pacific will not tolerate the demonisation of ethnic minorities, perversion of democracy and rapid militarisation that has taken placed in Papua New Guinea. Therefore, Australasia, on behalf of each and every nation of the Pacific, hereby imposes an ultimatum upon Papua New Guinea. Moran's de facto 'Kingdom' has precisely two weeks (M: We'll say 1 IRL day), to accept the terms of the ultimatum, or face military and diplomatic repercussions.
The terms are as follows:
  • Papua New Guinea shall immediately cease the relocation of ethnic minorities. It shall also provide generous compensation to those that have already been relocated, as well a formal apology to all those negatively affected by the policy.
  • Papua New Guinea will also halt its militarisation, by suspending the mass conscription campaign it has recently embarked upon.
  • Benjamin Moran will immediately step down from government and reinstitute a fully representative democracy.
  • Following the reinstitution of this government, free and fair elections will take place across the country, which shall be observed by impartial international organisations.
The government of Australasia stresses the seriousness of this ultimatum. If ignored, or if any of the terms are rejected, we and our allies will be forced to respond with military actions. For the sake of his own people, Moran must accept these terms.
Until the ultimatum has been accepted, Australasia shall enforce a full maritime and aeronautical blockade around Papua New Guinea. Any plane or vessel leaving or entering the territorial waters and airspace of Papua New Guinea must first dock or land in Melayu Raya or Australasia in order to be checked. They shall be able to proceed to or from Papua New Guinea so long as they are not transporting military personnel or equipment. Any vehicles which do not abide by this blockade will be either fired upon or captured. Alongside this, any vehicles found carrying contraband will be confiscated for the foreseeable future.
In order to enforce this blockade, Australasia shall deploy the following:
Maritime deployments:
Aeronautical deployments:
At present, these forces will remain around the coastline of Papua New Guinea to ensure the the blockade is respected. Aeronautical forces will not penetrate deep into Papua New Guinean territory.
Australasia requests that its strategic partners Melayu Raya, Fiji and the United States join the blockade with their own deployments. Once again, we strongly urge Moran's de facto government to accept the terms of the ultimatum. Finally, we ask that the other nations of the world humbly respect our diplomatic actions and refrain from intervening, as this will be seen as direct support for Papua New Guinea's nefarious regime.

2016.10.11 09:36 hughmcf [Meta] Something needs to happen in Japan.

Okay guys, so I really think that Japan should be feeling the brunt of this embargo by now. If you're unaware of what I'm talking about, it's explained here. Japan has now been embargoed by the following nations, including major trading partners such as South Korea, Australasia, Melayu Raya and Thailand. The United States has also placed a heavy tariff on Japan. As if this wouldn't be bad enough, Japan declaring war and being isolated by the international community should have resulted in a total lack of confidence in the Japanese market. The Yen and Japanese stock market should be collapsing and the economy should be in chaos by now.
I placed this embargo on Japan for the sake of forcing the government's hand into signing the treaty, but that only works if the economic damage is actually simulated, so I guess I'm just asking for a mod crisis. There should be significant social tension, an economic collapse and great amounts of anger against the Imperial government at the very least, as they could have avoided this situation by simply instituting a democracy as requested by the treaty. Anything less would be very unrealistic. So that's just something for the mods to think about. Thanks :)

2016.10.07 08:51 hughmcf [Diplomacy] Australasia's Response to Japanese Aggression

There is no doubt that each and every citizen of Australasia has been shocked and offended by the false and illogical allegations leveled at our nation by our former ally, Japan. Since the end of the tragic Pacific War, our friends across the sea have been more than hospitable to us, allowing for the creation of one of the strongest alliances on the planet. But now, Japan has reneged on its prosperous alliance with the people of Australasia by believing that somehow, we would wish to see their nation, their Emperor and their people destroyed. It is simply ludicrous that the Japanese government has ignored our innocence, compliance and offers for a diplomatic solution, instead pushing for a war.
We have stated, time and time again, that the actions of Mr. Shackleton and other Australasian nationals do not represent our administration or country in the slightest. From the start of this crisis, we have worked tirelessly to deescalate the situation. We also have nothing to gain or benefit from attacking Japan, a valuable ally, trading partner and historical friend. Finally, we have lost our own citizens in the chaos of these attacks. We mourn alongside Japan. But now we mourn for more than those killed in these attacks, we mourn for our alliance and for the lives that will be lost if Japan continues its campaign of aggression.
Being unequivocally committed to peace, we will attend the peace conferences, in the confidence that once Japan calms down, it shall realise that Australasia has in fact, nothing to do with the attacks. In our committment to peace, we ask that other nations in the region chose peace and refrain from escalating the situation, as the United States has done.
However, since Japan has now declared war upon our nation, Australasia must respond in a manner that will guarantee the protection of the security and sovereignty of our allies and ourselves. Therefore, the President has today announced the total mobilisation of the Australasian Armed Forces. Forces currently fighting in Pakistan have been ordered home, to prepare for any Japanese incursions.
We shall not use our forces in any offensive manner. For the time being, their purpose shall be to defend against any attacks made by the Empire of Japan directed towards us or our strategic partners (M: Sound familiar?). We trust that peace will still prevail and that the Japanese will back down, but if this does not occur, we must be ready for any potential attacks.
Whilst Japan has declared war against us, we will not recognise this declaration or respond with our own. We will not engage in a conflict because we were accused of committing an action we had nothing to do with. Having said that, we ask for assurances from our various Key Military Partners, that they will meet their obligations to defend us if Japan chooses conflict over peace.
Our Key Military Partners are as follows:
Independent Partners:
Association of Southeast Asian Nation: (Kingdom of Thailand, Republic of Indochina, Republic of the Philippines, Republic of Singapore, Republic of the Union of Myanmar, Brunei Darussalam and the Kingdom of Cambodia)
Trans-Indian Ocean Pact:
Pacific Union: (Republic of Kiribati, The Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of Nauru, Republic of Palau, Independent State of Papua New Guinea, Independent State of Samoa, Solomon Islands, Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, Kingdom of Tonga, Tuvalu, Republic of Vanuatu, Republic of New Caledonia, Republic of Wallis and Futuna, Republic of Polynesia, Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Republic of Fiji).
We ask that each of these nations joins us in pushing for a peaceful solution to the crisis. If we cannot find one, many will perish. But we also ask that each of these nations honours its obligations to defend Australasian security and sovereignty if it is threatened by any Japanese incursions, as we would for each and every one of you were threatened.
Australasia is committed to peace, as demonstrated when we resolved the Minerva Crisis. We demand that Japan chose peace over war. We are willing to defend ourselves, but would rather that no one dies.
